Bo Burnham is a comedian and musician who has been open about a lot of the mental health struggles that he has had. In particular, he uses his 2021 Netflix special Inside to speak about these issues. Burnham created the special during the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores themes of isolation, mental health, and the human experience in the digital age. The show All Eyes on Me, resonated especially with audiences.

The special gained a lot of attention and created new discussions around these topics for a lot of people.

Do you self-diagnose?

Have you ever been browsing or scrolling for a while and then come across something that makes you feel as if the algorithm knows you a little too well? I’m finding that self-diagnosis is an increasingly common issue when it comes to mental health for this very reason.

That is its job, to get to know you and to offer you content that feels familiar and enticing. What content creators then aim to do is create what can only be described as ‘blanket content’. Content that feels as if it is aimed at you, but it can really appeal to a mass audience.

What is bullying and are you ready to admit that you bully?

Bullying can occur throughout our lives. While we often associate it with our childhood, adults are not immune. Everywhere we interact with others—at work, in relationships, with family—there is the opportunity for bullying to happen. 

It can be challenging to admit to ourselves when we are the ones doing the bullying. None of us wants to think of ourselves as ‘bad people’ but there are many behaviours that constitute as bullying. Identifying that your actions towards others are negatively impacting them will help you find ways to change. 

No matter what stage of your life you’re in, understanding why you bully and how to stop is an important part of leading a happy and fulfilled life.
