How do you find your therapist and why is that bond so important?

When we discuss starting therapy and the importance of having regular check-ins with a professional, what is often overlooked is who you are having these heart-to-hearts with and your bond with them.

There is such easy access to a vast pool of therapists, online they are vetted and checked by many professional bodies and directories. So how do you narrow down the therapist for you? You have to find that connection. In a similar way, you aim to find that spark in a partner, so too do you find that bond in your therapist, you are looking for someone you are willing to divulge your deepest feelings to.

So why is this connection so important to find, and how do you find it?

1. Understanding you

Often you will look from something that reflects a therapist’s likes, dislikes, background and beliefs. These play a large role in you being able to feel there is understanding and empathy from your therapist through your bond. This understanding fosters a deeper connection and allows therapists to tailor their approach to meet your unique needs.

2. Trusting them

Trust is the foundation of any therapeutic relationship and is the basis of all practitioners. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you will also feel trust with your therapist. This feeling of trust comes from how the therapist approaches your issues, and reflects on Point 1, the understanding they have of you.

You must feel safe and comfortable opening up about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. A strong bond facilitates this trust, allowing you to share openly without fear of judgment.

3. Your Stable Emotional Support

A strong therapeutic relationship provides a safe space for you to explore your emotions. Finding that safe space each week allows you to feel validated, understood, and accepted. Through this support you are able to find the courage to deal with potentially difficult topics that you would usually avoid, and take action to learn and recover from them.

4. Collaboration to your success

Therapy is most effective when it’s a collaborative process between you and your therapist. A strong bond feels like a partnership, where both of you can work together towards your goals and your therapist is playing an active and trusted role in your journey.

5. Transference and Countertransference

The therapeutic relationship often involves the projection of feelings onto the therapist (transference) and the therapist’s emotional reactions to the client (countertransference). A strong bond allows both parties to navigate these dynamics constructively, leading to greater insight and growth.

The bond between a therapist and their client serves as the vehicle for healing, growth, and positive change. It provides the foundation upon which effective therapy can take place.
