It’s Okay To Want A New Career

There is a time at any job when you consider if you are at the right place and wanting a new career. These ruminations come from various sources, and the Covid pandemic is making dead-end jobs even harder to handle.

Lack of promotion opportunities, growth (professional and personal), low salary, poor hours, and lousy workplace culture are all reasons people begin to loathe the daily drudge of their nine-to-five job. There are many indicators to tell if you are ready to depart your current role and pursue a more fulfilling position.

Unfortunately, Covid is not making the job market a better place. People who were looking forward to giving their two weeks notice prior to the pandemic feel stuck at their jobs because of the job market’s uncertainty.

Even people who hate every aspect of their job are thankful if they have kept a steady income coming into their households during these trying times.

If Your Work Seems Trivial, Find a New One

At its core, work always includes completing checklists of things we don’t want to do. Even people who love their jobs have to go through inscrutable tasks to keep their managers happy.

Emails, invoices, meetings where your presence isn’t really required, unexpected emergencies and other activities take away from the time you actually get to focus on your work. If you don’t get to enjoy your work or feel no one benefits from it, it’s hard to remain motivated week after week.

Unless you are a rocket scientist (whose job prospects seem to be growing yearly), you can probably do your job at any company in any industry. All companies need project managers, accountants, and data scientists. You can use your current skills to pursue a job at a company you admire or in an industry that you’ve always wanted to be a part of.

You Can Have a New Career Without Relocating

One of the drawbacks of looking for a new job is the changes it will have on your life’s normalcy. Each new job prospect raises dozens of logistical questions and situations that only have hypothetical answers:

“Is it worth a pay cut?”

“Is the commute worth it?”

“Is it selfish to uproot my family for my job prospects?”

Remote work is eliminating the logistical questions when your current job just becomes too much to handle.

Covid and the ensuing pandemic made remote work a viable option for millions of people who don’t enjoy commutes or small talk. The rise in remote work gives you more career options than exist in your local economy.

Professionals are relocating less or moving to more financially friendly areas to get more bang for their buck. You can truly explore all of your career options without changing things for your whole family.

It’s Okay to Want a Higher Salary

Salary is an essential part of any job, and it’s important to know your self-worth. Failure to receive financial recognition for your work is a frustrating but very reasonable sign you should look for a new job or find a career that helps you provide better for your family.

No one bats an eyelash when people say there is money in tech companies and would not blame you for jumping onboard an established tech company or a new startup seeking unicorn status.

Just like regional companies, tech companies need people in human resources and sales. As tech grows, they will need people in smaller markets to speed up the adoption of new technologies.

Of course, the real money in tech goes to people who can write and edit code. Software engineers are building and creating the apps we depend on every day. People who work with software build new features and solve problems with creative thinking. Many people fed up with their current work are taking coding boot camps to get the skills they need to gain employment at tech companies.

Find the Things You Like About Your Current Position

There could always be a greener pasture, but it’s crucial to find the things you like about your current role.

The worst outcome of wanting a new job is getting desperate and accepting the first opportunity that comes your way and ending up in a worse position. Listing out the things you enjoy about your position will help you focus your future job search on companies that adhere to that standard.

This will increase the chance you will land a job that you prefer over your previous one.
