Build a Long-term Gift for Mother’s Day

With International Women’s Day bordering Mother’s Day, this is a great time to shine a light on positive change for women and mother’s which spans further than gifts and a day of recognition.

Do you as a mother often feel forgotten, disregarded or taken advantage of? Or do you notice these things in your mum and you want to know how to change things for the better?

Let’s highlight how to create positive and long-term change within the home to create an equal and respectful family dynamic.

Communication and Resolution:

Encourage open and honest communication at home. Talking to your children, especially as they get older, can feel difficult but just letting each other know that you are all there to talk lifts a large boundary that you might not realise was there.

Quality time:

When you do all get to spend time together, ensure it’s something you all want to do. More importantly, each take on your own responsibilities rather than assuming one person will plan everything and consider what everyone wants.

Respect:

Teach and model respect for one another. Respect each other’s space, respect each other’s opinions and respect when someone expresses their feelings in a situation.

Support:

Be supportive of each other’s goals, interests, and achievements. Celebrate successes together and offer encouragement during challenges or setbacks.

Boundaries:

Establish clear boundaries and expectations within the family. Respect each other’s personal space and individual differences.

A mum can often feel touched-out, overstimulated and burnt out. Be wary of how each of your day has gone and each make it clear what you would like or not like from each other. Sometimes the ideal Mother’s Day gift is a bit of space.

Flexibility:

Be flexible and adaptable to changes within the family. You can assign chores and tasks for everyone, but be open to trades or take into consideration and bad day, illness or stress. Recognise that each family member is unique and may have different needs and preferences.

Gratitude:

Cultivate an attitude of gratitude within the family by expressing appreciation for each other regularly. Encourage each of you to acknowledge and be grateful for the support and love you receive from one another.
